This name is probably new to you unless you have been riding between the north of Italy and Switzerland where the mountain of Ardena is located, or if you used to watch Pro Races like the “TreValli Varesine”, the “Giro di Lombardia”, the “Tour of the Alps” or the “2008 Varese Cycling World Championship” won by Alessandro Ballan (with his truly beautiful Wilier Triestina).

A territory which I call “Land of Champions” with over 100 Years of Cycling History but also a beautiful and hard Training Field for many riders.

I personally was a junior pro rider in Italy during the late 90’s and early 2000, which was a time for truly interesting developments of the hardware (frames, wheels, gears and ball-bearings, …) that moved from steel to aluminum and titanium to magnesium then carbon monocoques. These technology improvements all focused on increasing performances and allowing riders extra power.

The same innovations were not happening on the clothing side or software side of cycling. The only changes were the printing styles and how breathable fabrics could be.

During my studies of mechanical engineering at the Politecnico University in Milan, I came across studies of fluid-dynamics, thermodynamics and aerodynamics and also researches for garments and their materials for astronauts to be used in the aerospace field, an environment in which pilots must perform in really extreme conditions inside the cockpit of jets or spaceships and therefore all the focus of their software equipment was to provide proper thermal regulation along with fatigue reduction thanks to the application of special composite materials.

This was when I started thinking that my dream of creating a new generation of cycle wear could come true. I set about finding a facility in my own home city Varese that could produce this gear, one able to actively reduce muscular fatigue while riding (without compression).

Vardena was born!!

An Italian brand to produce the world’s first full carbon cycling wear. My development originated from a special carbon composite material originally used in the aerospace sector.
